BioPerine® and Black Pepper Extract: What Is Piperine?
How a branded black pepper extract differs from ordinary black pepper, what piperine actually is, and how to read a standardisation percentage on a label.

BioPerine® is a branded black pepper extract made from the dried fruits of Piper nigrum. Its manufacturer, Sabinsa, specifies it as containing a minimum of 95% piperine. Piperine is one of the naturally occurring alkaloids found in black pepper and is responsible for much of the spice's characteristic pungency.
What is BioPerine®?
BioPerine® is a branded, trademarked ingredient name rather than a generic description. It is prepared from the dried fruits of Piper nigrum — black pepper, a species in the Piperaceae family.
Its manufacturer specifies it as a standardised extract containing a minimum of 95% piperine.
That matters for label reading: BioPerine® identifies one specific standardised extract with a stated manufacturer specification. It is not a generic name for every black pepper extract on the market.
What is piperine?
Piperine is an alkaloid associated with black pepper and isolated from Piper nigrum.
It is a defined chemical constituent of the fruit — not the same thing as the whole pepper fruit, and not the same thing as an extract that contains it. When a label mentions piperine, it is naming a constituent; when it names an extract, it is naming the ingredient material.

What does “standardised to 95% piperine” mean?
Where an extract is explicitly standardised to 95% piperine, that percentage describes the proportion of the extract represented by piperine under the ingredient specification.
As with any percentage on a label, it should be read together with:
- the actual amount of extract present, and
- whether that amount is stated per capsule or per daily serving.
It should not be assumed that all black pepper extracts follow the same specification, and a higher percentage does not automatically mean a better supplement.
Hypothetical example — not our product. If 10 mg of an extract were explicitly standardised to 95% piperine, the arithmetic would be 10 × 0.95 = 9.5 mg piperine under that stated specification.
How BioPerine® appears in Curcumin Supreme Trio
The current Curcumin Supreme Trio label lists BioPerine® at 10 mg, alongside Curcumin 95% 500 mg and Boswellia Serrata 490 mg. The bottle contains 120 capsules and the suggested use on the label is 2 capsules daily.
Because BioPerine® itself is a manufacturer-specified ingredient standardised to a minimum of 95% piperine, the ingredient identity is more specific than a label that simply says “black pepper”. We still present the product amount exactly as the label does: BioPerine® 10 mg.
What to check on a black pepper extract label
- Botanical species — is Piper nigrum stated?
- Whole pepper or extract?
- Branded extract name, if any.
- Actual extract amount.
- Whether a piperine standardisation is stated.
- Exactly what that percentage refers to.
- Per capsule or per daily serving?
- Number of servings in the pack.
Is BioPerine® the same as piperine?
No. Piperine is a naturally occurring chemical constituent found in black pepper. BioPerine® is a branded black pepper extract that its manufacturer standardises to a minimum of 95% piperine. The two terms are related, but they do not describe the same thing.
Is BioPerine® the same as black pepper?
No. Black pepper is the fruit/spice from Piper nigrum. BioPerine® is a processed, standardised extract made from that source material.

Black pepper is the source material; black pepper extract is a processed ingredient; piperine is one constituent within black pepper; and BioPerine® is a specific branded extract standardised by its manufacturer to a minimum of 95% piperine.
